From the East

Well Brethren, we made it.  Happy New Year!

I don't have to tell you, it has been a difficult year.  There are very few of us that have not been adversely affected by the economic slowdown or falling stock market.  All of us, if not a friend, neighbor or relative has taken a financial hit to some degree.  Many of us have either been forced to ask for some form of help or have had other people request help from us.

In most cases whether the help was given or received, both parties benefited.  In some extreme situations that help was life changing for either or both parties.

Which brings me to the point; it is a New Year, although the economy and prospects for the future appear to be improving, it is not over yet.  The indications are that a recovery will be a long, slow grind.  There will continue to be people that need help.

That is where Ferndale Lodge enters the picture.  In the November Trestle Board, I suggested that we as a Lodge should decide upon a goal, put a plan together and execute the plan.

The holidays are over and now is the time. At this month's Business Meeting, I will select a committee and charge them with the task of presenting to the Lodge three choices for charitable work.  They will report at our February Business Meeting.

The choices at minimum must include a legitimate, established charity.  It must provide for a long term relationship with our Lodge, preferably something based in the community and we must be able to gauge the benefit of our work.

After the choice is made we will decide on a plan and then go to work.

In my opinion the effort is consistent with and can be a key element in our efforts to reinstate Ferndale Lodge as part of the community.  Also, it will provide our members with a common purpose, something we can all participate in, without being a burden to a limited, few brothers.  Finally it could be fun along with the added benefit of fulfilling our commitment to the lodge and Masonry in general

Fraternally,
Robert Russell
Worshipful Master
